Renters Insurance

Your landlord's policy covers the building. It does not cover a single thing inside your unit.

What Is Renters Insurance?

Renters insurance covers your personal belongings against fire, theft, water damage and storm damage, provides liability protection if someone is hurt in your unit, and pays for somewhere to stay if the place becomes unlivable. It is consistently the least expensive policy we write and the one most often skipped.

Why Renters Insurance Matters

If a fire or a burst pipe takes out your apartment, the building owner’s insurance rebuilds the building. Your furniture, electronics, clothes and deposit are entirely your problem without a policy of your own. Liability is the quieter half — if a guest is injured in your unit, or you accidentally cause damage that spreads to neighboring units, that claim comes to you.

Who Needs Renters Insurance?

Anyone renting an apartment, house, duplex or condo. Many Northwest Arkansas landlords now require proof of it at lease signing, but it is worth carrying whether or not the lease demands it.

Coverage Highlights

  • Personal property coverage
  • Personal liability protection
  • Additional living expenses
  • Medical payments to others
  • Off-premises coverage for belongings

Local Considerations

Bentonville is only 50.4% owner-occupied, so roughly half the city rents — and median gross rent runs $1,344 in Bentonville, $1,277 countywide and $1,270 in Rogers. That is a meaningful monthly commitment already, which is exactly why the additional-living-expenses piece matters: if a storm from the county’s 167 recorded thunderstorm wind events makes your unit unlivable, this is the coverage that pays for the interim place to live at current market rent.
